On some occasions it is necessary to close a badger sett. We aim to avoid this, but sometimes it is inevitable, or it is the best option for the badgers. However, sett closures must be done properly to ensure no badgers are harmed.

Firstly, it is necessary to obtain a licence for the closure of the sett which may only be done in the summer months.

Gates must then be fitted to the entrances of the sett. Initially, the gates allow the badgers to enter and leave the sett, then they are set to one way only - allowing the badgers to leave the sett but not return.

Once the sett is clear of badgers the sett can be closed, by carefully digging out the tunnels so that it cannot be re-used.
